At this moment in your life

put that dad wisdom to use!

i was an uncle long before a dad. and i thought i knew a few things about health & fitness. turns out, i had a lot to learn.

in all the beautiful changes of getting older, learning (& re-learning) & understanding your body is near the top.

there's no ideal diet: there's only the one that you have figured out works for you, at this moment in your life.

there's no ideal workout program: there's only the one that keeps you injury-free and motivated and progressing, at this moment in your life.

and there's no ideal body: there's only the body that you feel healthy and strong and confident in, at this moment in your life.

my job as a coach is to help my clients answer those questions & put together a plan to carry them out.

i do the same thing for myself each year. and each year, i learn a little bit more both about health and fitness and myself. and change my diet, my workouts, and my goal physique accordingly.

like I said at the start, put your dad wisdom to use! figure out what you want, figure out what works for you, and get after it, and make the changes you need along the way.

🙏♥️💪🤝

A really long reading project

helping with your fitness journey: a really long reading project.

last night i started reading a massive, dense, difficult tome (dogen's shobogenzo) & it made me think of people's journey to fitness.

i've given myself a year to finish it, with the goal of reading a few pages here & there every day with longer stretches when possible.

it's the same as fitness: it's about what you do every single day adding up to a whole lot. it's not about rushing through: fitness takes time, patience, & consistent effort--and pushing through difficulties. just like a long, challenging book.

and---if you pick the right book or books or the right fitness program---you'll be rewarded all along the journey as well as at the end of your book or fitness goal.

but enough of the metaphor. consider picking up a giant reading project. i put a few up here that i've read & others that I'd like to. reading a few shorter books of the same author is very also rewarding.

pick something that's difficult: whether the subject matter, structure, or the style. (so no harry potter or game of thrones, as much as i've enjoyed breezing through those.)

the difficulty is important: because your fitness journey is going to be difficult. you're going to hit roadblocks. you're going to get frustrated. you're going to wonder if it's worth it. but you're going to keep plugging through to the end.

and if you do pick up any reading projects, let me know and check out indiebound for local book sellers carrying the title.

(note: if you go with something like james joyce's ulysses, consider getting the audiobook too. it really brings it to life to read along in parts. the same is true of a lot of giant books by masterful but challenging stylists. [but read the book, don't just listen to it].)

Those iron-on tank tops

we've been around for a while...

yesterday, my partner & i celebrated our 11-year wedding anniversary. reminiscing on that weekend reminded me that this fitness enterprise has been 8 years in the making.

all these pictures are from 2013, when the pesky blubber fitness club was born (about 9 months before our first child...🤔)

it's taken just a minute to get from there to here. and the line from dfw sums up the experience: trying to learn, trying to be coachable, trying not to be broken.

much love gratitude thanks & appreciation to the beautiful humans who came out to mission bay park almost a decade ago to humor me on those sundays by wearing those iron-on tank tops.
